The United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse (UWBCCSA) is a broad based substance use/abuse coalition dedicated to reducing substance use/abuse and all its devastating consequences on individuals, families, and communities. The United Way’s primary role is to serve as a coalition-building organization that brokers partnerships between federal, state and local agencies to foster, develop, and enhance integrated drug-free efforts throughout Broward County, while searching for innovative and effective ways to address the issue of substance use/abuse. We had the pleasure of talking to Louis Rosaria, Director of Development and Christine Frederick, Executive Director of The FLITE Center. The FLITE Center is a centralized facility in Broward County for dependent youth to learn the skills needed for independent living. The topics of concentration include, but are not limited to, the importance of completion of education; government benefits, budgeting and banking; job and vocational training; housing options and other essential skills needed to live independently. We had the pleasure of interviewing Nancy May, President and Sharon Edleman of Friday Kid’s Pak. As a part of a A Heart Like His Foundation, Friday Kid’s Pak is a weekend food program for local homeless children. A Heart Like His Foundation, Inc. was established to change the world for hungry and starving children. These children have no control over their homelessness or family situation – they are innocent in their circumstances. These at risk children are fed in school during the week, however many leave school on Friday not knowing if they will eat a meal before returning to school on Monday. Friday Kid’s Pak goal is to provide these children a Friday Kid’s Pak containing: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 snacks, 2 fruit cups, 2 milk boxes and 2 juice boxes. The children will receive their Friday Kid’s Pak from a school administrator every Friday during the school year. We had the pleasure of having Alison Burgos, the founding president of Garage 22. Garage 22 works to create an accepting space that develops a loving culture for foster and at risk boys. Our services include access to mentorship, workshops, clothing, sports gear, a pop up barbershop art, coding and music lab so that they can successfully and independently enter adulthood.
