Rob Sommer, Director of Community Outreach for Alzheimer’s Community Care was the guest this week on Forum for Nonprofits.  Rob discussed the services provided to both victims of Alzheimer’s Disease and as importantly to the family care givers of Alzheimer’s patients.  Alzheimer’s Community Care has locations throughout Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties and their services are also available to Broward residents at their Boca Raton location.  Their slogan is “We place a safety net around patients and caregivers every day.” They can be reached by phone at 561-683-2700, or on the Alzheimer’s Community Care website here. Representatives of Healthy Mothers, Health Babies of Palm Beach County were our featured guests on Forum for this week.  Dr. Marsha Fishbane, board Chair and Founder of HMHB, Angelique Francois, Program Manager of HMHB and Rochelle Silver, a client of HMHB were interviewed. Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Palm Beach County provides access to prenatal care and education for uninsured and under-insured women and teens in Palm Beach County. In 2012, more than 3500 babies born in Palm Beach County were born with low birth weight as a result of little or no prenatal care. At particular risk are Black/African American babies. The Muscular Dystrophy  Association, Inc. is in the midst of its LOCK UP promotion where they raise funds for MDA by “locking up” business people to raise “bail money” which goes directly to MDA in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.  Vanessa Fernandez, the fundraising coordinator for MDA in South Florida was on Forum For Non Profits to give some background on the MDA cause and the programs they have to benefit people with Muscular Distrophy and especially to promote the “Lock-Up” fundraiser event on July 24 and also in September of 2013.  Jamie Straus of Coastline Marine in Pompano Beach, who is to be “locked-up” to raise money for MDA came to tell his story.  It’s a clever and fun way that MDA uses that helps to raise funds.  The Fort Lauderdale headquarters phone number is 954-971-0123, or you can visit their web site here. Mark Martin, Psy.D is the Regional Director-Community Relations and Development for the Southern Bureau of AHF  – the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, located in Fort Lauderdale. AHF is the largest non-profit global organization in the world. AHF started in Los Angeles, but now has opened many of their services, including the AHF Pharmacies and The Out Of The Closet thrift stores, here in South Florida. AHF’s motto is “Cutting Edge Medicine and Advocacy Regardless Of Ability To Pay.” They provide many services to help people with HIV in South Florida with locations in Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and two locations in Miami/Miami Beach.  Mark is also the Director of the Florida AIDS Walk, an annual event that raises significant funds to benefit people with AIDS. Each year more than 1,700 abused and neglected children are assigned by a judge to a trained Guardian ad Litem (GAL), and according to Laura Davis, finding enough volunteers is no easy task.  Listen as the Community Outreach and Volunteer Recruiter for GAL talks about how anyone over age 21 can become a Guardian ad Litem and help fill this tremendous void in our community.   Laura says finding men is the toughest aspect of her job, but that all types of people are needed – people who care about children.  Giving back in this way, however, comes easy to volunteer board members Amy Goldin and Louis Berlin.  Listen as they explain their own experiences and ability to find the time necessary to help these children.  Not only do they give of their time to help kids, they formed a chapter of Voices of Children to help raise funds for the program and the children.  Since government agencies can’t raise money, this charitable arm enables these volunteers to solicit donations for such items as uniforms, medical equipment or food for the children and support for volunteers.  For information on how to become a guardian or to simply provide financial support, call (954) 831-6214 or visit their web site here. Today’s guests on the Forum For Nonprofits program were William P. Bee, Jr, CEO and President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and Richard Levine, who serves on the board of directors of BBBSPBM and is a representative of Macy’s, which is a big sponsor of the organization.  Bill spoke about the recent expansion into South Palm Beach counties, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.  He explained the services provided to the youngsters in need, how you can get involved in the mentoring program and how to help out with donations of both time and dollars.  Richard Levine spoke about Macy’s involvement and how their company and its employees help both financially and with donated time. Molly Murphy, the Outreach Manager for Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida, Inc. came to the Forum for Non Profits to discuss their incredible organization and how it provides help to special needs children and adults alike.  Formerly Horses and The Handicapped, this organization uses horses in the therapy process for special needs students.  Equine-Assisted activities (EAA) are widely recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy that people with special needs can receive. They have been providing this therapy for almost 30 years. Students use all five senses as they ride. Students process visual, auditory, and tactile information which leads to significantly improved muscle tone, strength, speech, balance and coordination. The programs, as well as ways to get involved philanthropically, were discussed. ARC Broward gives people with disabilities the opportunity to reach their full potential. Listen as Dennis Haas, ARC’s president and CEO and Development Director Jessica Kersey talk about how this organization, which was founded in 1956, provides services and employment to children and adults with autism, Down Syndrome and other intellectual and life challenges. The organization operates at 10 locations and provides 21 programs, as well as “mission-based” enterprises that provide training and employment opportunities for individuals served while generating revenue to help fund services. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, has expanded its offerings to become a magnet for scientific inspiration for anyone age 2 to 92. Listen as Kate Arrizza, COO, and Marcy Hoffman, director of development, describe the new space and ways donors, volunteers and visitors can get involved in the mission to bring the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers to life. Hear in detail about the hands-on experiences of students from throughout the county, from dissecting frogs to petting sharks.  Kate, a former U.S. Naval Officer, volunteered at the museum during high school and Marcy’s daughter, who is pursuing a college degree in pre-med, represents the fourth generation of science museum supporters. Margie Larkin and Jerry Crank were in the studios to talk about the West Palm Beach-based Center for Creative Education, a program that connects artists in the community with teachers in the classroom in order to teach traditional subjects in new and creative ways. They recently opened a new facility in the Northwood neighborhood for classes and other arts outreach events. Their more than 40 trained teaching artists participate in both in-school and after school activities.
