Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholar Program at FAU

The Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program provides first-generation, low-income students with financial resources and personal support to help them graduate from FAU in four years or less.

The Need

2017 statistics reveal that 53% of college students graduate with roughly $23,300 in student loan debt. National student debt, a hot topic for financial watchdogs, has surpassed credit card and other forms of personal debt, coming in second only to mortgage debt. Encompassing 45 million+ graduates, and reaching more than $1.4 trillion, national student debt has become a crisis.

The financial ripple effect for graduates saddled with student debt is substantial.

The Mission

By addressing systemic barriers and challenges, we provide a full grant and scholarship financial aid package as well as a comprehensive support program to ensure students thrive at Florida Atlantic University. We help students develop valuable college success strategies, build confidence, understand their first-generation identity, connect to peer and professional mentors, and access campus resources which prepare them for a successful college career and meaningful post-graduate life.
