Heart2Heart Senior Outreach
On this week’s show we had Blake Silverstrom, the executive director of Heart 2 Heart. The vision of Heart2Heart Senior Outreach is to provide residents in South Florida long term care centers with regular and consistent visitation with the opportunity. South Florida leads the nation in the number of elderly residents per capita. A vast majority of residents in long term care centers do not receive any visitors at all; not from family members, friends, or sadly, even the church. Most of the residents – who served us and our country as parents, grandparents, teachers, doctors, nurses, civic officials, business professionals, law enforcement officers and in the armed forces – are lonely and feel abandoned and rejected. Rotary Community Garden and Food Forest of Coral Springs
This week on Forum for Nonprofits, we had the pleasure of having Judi Gulko, the co-organizer of the Rotary Community Garden and Food Forest of Coral Springs. The Rotary Community Garden of Coral Springs is a joint effort of the City of Coral Springs, the Rotary Club of Coral Springs and interested citizens of our community. The garden is adjacent to the Dr. Steven G. Paul Dog Park, located at 2575 Sportsplex Drive, in Coral Springs, Florida. This is the garden’s seventh year. There are fifty-four 4′ * 8′ garden boxes, which individuals, families or groups rent out for the year. There is a mandala circle garden and other community areas where we grow herbs and vegetables for all our gardeners. There are row crops where food is grown for donation to homeless shelters. They are also currently building a food forest in the fruit grove. A food forest is a garden like a forest ecosystem, with different types, stages and layers of perennial plants which are edible or useful. Literacy Coalition of PBC
This week on the show we had Kristen Calder, the CEO of Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. The Literacy Coalition is a not for profit organization committed to ensuring that every resident of Palm Beach County, Florida is able to read. Their philosophy is best expressed by Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations: “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope… (it is) the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.” The mission of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
This week on Forum for Nonprofits, we had Orli Zimmerman and Melissa Mulvihill from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Make A Wish Foundation
On this week’s show we had the pleasure of having Richard Kelly and Marina Diez from the Make a Wish Foundation. The Make a Wish Foundation grew from their humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to have a computer. They grant experiences, also known as “wishes” to children with life threatening medical conditions. They have grown into an organization that grants a wish every 16 hours. Mothers Against Drunk Driving
This week on Forum for Nonprofits, we had the pleasure of having Donna Byrne, development director and Megan Aja, victims services specialist of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
On this week at Forum for Nonprofits we had Don Eachus, the development director for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Foundation. For the past seven years on a Sunday morning in February, thousands of people have gathered at Miramar Regional Park, united by one common cause – to support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at its annual Tour de Broward event. Now in its eighth year, the need is greater than ever to raise funds for South Broward’s only pediatric hospital, which has become the leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. In Fiscal Year 2016, JDCH cared for children needing 61,607 hospital outpatient visits, 7,455 pediatric surgeries, and 9,538 admissions and observation stays. Funds from previous years have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children with a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions. It houses the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, one of only two of its kind in South Florida. Funds have also supported programs for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping to improve the lives of many oncology patients and families. However, the need is greater this year because funds raised will help support programs throughout Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, as it aims to grow in the community and continue to expand services. Shih Tzu Rescue, Inc.
This week on the show we had Stephanie Kane Hochberger, a board member of the Shih Tzu Rescue. Shih Tzu and Lap Dog Rescue, Inc. (a.k.a. “Shih Tzu Rescue, Inc.”) is dedicated to the rescue of Shih Tzu and other companion dogs in South Florida. Since 1995, they have been working to find quality lifetime homes for unwanted small, medium and even large companion dogs. Most rescued dogs are voluntarily surrendered to them by their owners. When they are turned over to them, rescued dogs are neutered, tested for heartworms and parasites, and receive medical attention (including dental) and all required shots. Shih Tzu Rescue is a NO-KILL shelter, which means dogs that don’t find permanent homes are welcomed in their shelter until they are adopted. Shih Tzu Rescue is a registered 501 (c) (3) Public Charity that must rely on the generosity of conscientious individuals and businesses to help cover the costs of caring for these special companions.
